Czech Embassy Washington DC: Visa Requirements, Documents & Appointment Guide (2026)

Planning to apply for a Czech visa through the Washington DC jurisdiction? Quick check first: US passport holders traveling for tourism or business for 90 days or less generally don't need a visa at all under the Schengen visa-waiver program. This guide is for applicants who don't qualify for that.

Does the Washington DC Jurisdiction Cover You?

The Czech Embassy in Washington DC's jurisdiction is broader and less predictable than most, it covers Alabama, Arkansas, DC, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Antigua and Barbuda. If you're in one of the states served by the Czech consulates in Chicago, New York, or Los Angeles instead, contact those offices directly.

Where to Apply

  • Address: Consular Department, Embassy of the Czech Republic, 3900 Spring of Freedom Street NW, Washington, DC 20008
  • Public hours: every business day, 8:30-11:30 AM

Applications go directly through the embassy, there's no third-party visa center involved. You must schedule your appointment by email first, at washington.visa@mzv.gov.cz, before showing up. All Schengen applicants must appear in person for fingerprinting.

Full Document Checklist (Schengen Short-Stay Visa)

Sourced directly from the embassy's official visa page:

  1. Completed Schengen visa application form (available on the Czech Foreign Ministry's site, must be signed in front of the visa officer, in person).

  2. Valid passport: issued within the last 10 years, at least 2 blank pages, valid at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area. Bring the original plus copies of the data page and any prior Schengen visas.

  3. Proof of legal status in the US: original Green Card, Green Card stamp, Advance Parole, or valid long-term visa (F1, H1B, etc.) with a valid I-94, students also need their I-20, DS-2019, or IAP-66.

  4. Proof of residency in the DC jurisdiction (driver's license or Real ID showing your address).

  5. One recent passport photo, plain light background.

  6. Proof of onward travel after your Schengen trip: a confirmed itinerary, flight reservation, or ticket, plus any visa required for that next destination.

  7. Proof of sufficient funds: personal bank statement from the last 3 months, showing your name and address.

  8. Letter of continued employment, with income statement for the last 3 months, or business license and tax returns if self-employed.

  9. Purpose-specific documents: hotel reservation and itinerary for tourism, business-relations letter for business trips, conference/event invitation, school acceptance letter for study, or a formal invitation authorized by the Alien Police (which can substitute for some of the funds/accommodation documents).

  10. Proof of accommodation: hotel booking, hotel voucher, or a private invitation with the host's name, address, and visit dates.

  11. Travel medical insurance: valid across the full Schengen territory for your entire stay, at least €30,000 (~$45,000) coverage, covering evacuation, repatriation, and emergency treatment, with no deductible, this is stricter than some other missions' wording.

  12. Visa fee, cash or money order only (personal/business checks not accepted).

  13. A pre-paid, trackable return envelope, if you want your passport mailed back rather than picked up in person.

Note the round-trip framing here is slightly different from France or Germany: the Czech checklist explicitly asks for proof you can proceed to your next destination after the Schengen area, not just a round-trip home. (A round-trip reservation from Get Itinerary satisfies this either way, it shows your onward and return travel together.)

A Few Things Worth Double-Checking

  • Insurance must have no deductible, several other consulates accept low-deductible policies; Czech is explicit that it does not.

  • The jurisdiction list is unusually wide and non-contiguous (it includes Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Antigua and Barbuda), don't assume you're covered by geography alone, check the list above.

  • Appointments are booked by email, not an online portal, response times can vary, request early.
